Q7-01 What's the difference between an EMI and an English-taught course?
EMI is a complex pedagogical approach which comprises the use of language and content-based instruction. For EMI(English as a Medium of Instruction) courses, the delivery of content, whole-class interaction, the learning materials, and the demonstration and assessment of learning outcomes (such as oral presentation, assignments, or tests) should be in English (a universal language). In certain situations (such as group discussions), students enrolled in the course may interact with each other using their native language (such as Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, Indonesian, French, etc.) to facilitate creative thinking or consensus building. However, students should be asked to present their discussion outcomes in English. Subject courses conducted using EMI teaching methods should encourage the students to concentrate much more on their interpersonal communication skills (speaking and writing) in their academic field.
According to《NCHU Classification Criteria for English-taught Courses》,there are mainly four types of English-taught courses offered to meet different learning goals (please refer to the chart below).

Q7-05 Are there any special requirements or rewards for being a TA in EMI/ESAP courses? Can international students serve as TAs?
- Teaching Assistants (TAs) play different roles in class and after class depending on the requirements of various courses and teaching models. However, we hope that TAs (especially those serving in EMI courses) can develop the ability to guide small group discussions and help students use university-common vocabulary for classroom communication. Therefore, the Bilingual Center will regularly organize bilingual TA workshops, aiming to enable both domestic and international TAs to make good use of their basic English skills and further improve their classroom communication abilities.
- Teachers can certainly recruit international students as TAs. The university's International Affairs Office has established 'International Students TA Scholarship' regulations to encourage international master's and doctoral degree students to assist faculty who teach in English (please refer to the process diagram below).

NCHU BERC Outstanding Bilingual Teaching Assistant Award
To improve EMI teaching at National Chung Hsing University, the Bilingual Education Resource Center has launched this plan to support and reward teaching assistants (TAs). Bilingual TAs are students who assist in EMI or ESAP classes and must follow the university’s TA regulations, serving for at least one semester. The center organizes a selection committee of experienced teachers and TA representatives to review applications fairly. Applications are accepted once per semester, and winners will be announced separately.

Q: If I have already received teaching assistant rewards from other units, can I still receive a reward from your center?
A: If the teaching assistant materials submitted by the winning bilingual TA have already received a similar award from another unit of the university (such as the "Outstanding Teaching Assistant" from the Teaching Resources and Development Center, etc), the monetary reward can only be received from one source and cannot be duplicated. However, our center will still present a certificate to express encouragement and recognition.
