Q7-01 What's the difference between an EMI and an English-taught course?

EMI is a complex pedagogical approach which comprises the use of language and content-based instruction. For EMI(English as a Medium of Instruction)  courses, the delivery of content, whole-class interaction, the learning materials, and the demonstration and assessment of learning outcomes (such as oral presentation, assignments, or tests) should be in English (a universal language). In certain situations (such as group discussions), students enrolled in the course may interact with each other using their native language (such as Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, Indonesian, French, etc.) to facilitate creative thinking or consensus building. However, students should be asked to present their discussion outcomes in English. Subject courses conducted using EMI teaching methods should encourage the students to concentrate much more on their interpersonal communication skills (speaking and writing) in their academic field.

According to《NCHU Classification Criteria for English-taught Courses》,there are mainly four types of English-taught courses offered to meet different learning goals (please refer to the chart below).

Q7-02 Are there any teaching support that is made available to EMI/prospective EMI teachers at NCHU ?

EMI Teaching Capability Development policy is regulated on the basis of《NCHU Guidelines Governing Implementation of Teaching Capability Development Courses for New Faculty Members》, new faculty members are to complete a 40 hours EMI Teacher Certificate Training Program.
Alongside this, the Curriculum Division provides "Subsidy for All-English Courses and Degree Programs" for certified EMI teachers to financially support teaching innovation.
In the 112(a.k.a 2023/24) academic year, the Bilingual Education Resource Center, BERC has formulated the "proposal for Multidisciplinary Peer Observation Community" to motivate teachers to form a multidisciplinary peer observation community. We anticipate that it is an opportunity to allow teachers to learn from each other in a "non-threatening" climate.
In short, the institution breaks down several strategies and incrementally completes a support system for EMI teachers (refer to the chart below).
